Apple has been using stainless steel for its premium smartphones for years. That changed with the iPhone 15 Pro model which has a frame made from titanium, a poor conductor of heat, which could interfere with the ability of the handset to efficiently disperse heat.

There are several complaints on the Apple forum concerning the phone getting hot. With one user going as far as posting a photo of their iPhone 15 next to a thermometer reading a temperature of 44C (111F).

Reduced heat dissipation and the use of a titanium frame to achieve a lighter weight for the smartphone could negatively impact the phone’s thermal efficiency according to Ming-Chi Kuo, an Apple analyst at TF International Securities.

Apple’s response

On Saturday. Sept. 30, Apple said the device may feel warmer in the first few days after setting up the device because of increased background activity.

The tech giant also said software updates to third-party apps are causing the apps to overload the system and that it is working with app developers on fixes that will be rolled out.

The company also said that the new titanium shells on the iPhone 15 Pro and Pro Max models result in improved heat dissipation compared to stainless steel.
